Katie McDonald: UAND Board Member Spotlight

August 27th, 2012

Today we’re featuring another wonderful board member! Katie McDonald is a great dietitian and holds the honorable task of representing our state in the AND House of Delegates. She is one of our direct lines of communication with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  We’re so grateful for all the work that Katie does for UAND and the profession of dietetics as a whole.  Read on to get to know more about the wonderful Katie McDonald!

Current Board Position:

I am the delegate for the Utah Affiliate for the AND House of Delegates.

Have you served in any other positions for UAND or the Academy? If so, what were they?

I have had the pleasure of serving in many capacities for UAND including president, annual meeting chair, and editor for the UDA “Handbook of Clinical Dietetics.” (Really, it did exist!)

What is your current “day job”?

Clinical Dietitian at Primary Children’s Medical Center

What was your first job as a dietitian?

My first job as a dietitian was a temporary, PRN position at Primary Children’s.  It evolved into something more permanent and 34 years later, I am still here.

If you could have a super power what would it be and why?

“Martha Stewart” superpower because she can do anything and make it look good.

What is the best meal you’ve ever had?

Any meal that I don’t have to wash the dishes.

If you could spend a day anywhere, with anyone, doing anything you want, what would it be like?

Something outdoors with my family.  Tropical beach would be great, but not necessary.

What advice do you have for young dietitians? What do you wish you would have known when you first became a dietitian?

Get involved in UAND and AND.  The profession of dietetics needs you.  Aside from the altruistic contribution of your efforts, there are enormous opportunities to develop your leadership skills and potential.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  What is your dream job?

As I get closer to retirement, baking cookies with grandchildren sounds like a dream job to me.

Thank you Katie for all that you do! Have you head the pleasure of interacting with Katie either at Primary Children’s Hospital or in her many positions within UAND? We want to hear about it! Share your favorite memory of Katie over the years in the comments below.
