{"id":87,"date":"2012-04-02T08:00:14","date_gmt":"2012-04-02T08:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eatrightutah.org\/blog\/?p=87"},"modified":"2012-04-02T08:00:14","modified_gmt":"2012-04-02T08:00:14","slug":"an-important-update-on-the-cms-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eatrightutah.org\/blog\/an-important-update-on-the-cms-petition\/","title":{"rendered":"An Important Update on the CMS Petition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>First up, we would like to thank everyone for a fantastic Annual Conference! \u00a0A special thank you goes out to Rachel Richins, Conference Chair, \u00a0Joy Musselman, Conference Chair-elect, and Krista Viau, Sponsor Vendor chair, who had been working for months to plan and execute one of our most successful conferences yet. \u00a0Wonderful work ladies! \u00a0Be sure to check next week&#8217;s post for a full re-cap of the conference. \u00a0Until then you can check our our <a title=\"UAND Facebook page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/eatrightutah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook page<\/a> to see some great pictures from the two-day event.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to delay our planned post on the Annual Conference for a very important reason. \u00a0Last week the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics received a response to our petition to the White House from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). \u00a0Academy President Sylvia Escott-Stump issued a letter to all members summarizing what has happened thus far, explaining where the Academy currently stands and what each of us can do as members to support these efforts. \u00a0To read the full letter, log-in to the member&#8217;s section of the <a title=\"Information on CMS Petition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eatright.org\/Members\/content.aspx?id=6442466998\">Academy&#8217;s website<\/a>. \u00a0We have included a section of Sylvia&#8217;s letter below along with two specific ways you can take action today. \u00a0A number of dietitians have taken just a few minutes to \u00a0contact their representatives using the link below!\u00a0 The Academy has a web form that you can send directly to your own Utah legislators.\u00a0 While you&#8217;re there, you can also contact your legislators about our current efforts to expand medicare coverage for medical nutrition therapy.\u00a0We have made great progress on this issue thus far because of the participation of each and every one of our members. \u00a0We urge you all to continue to take a stand for our profession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CMS\u2019 Response to White House Petition about Intensive Behavioral Counseling for Obesity<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Tuesday, March 27, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics received a response from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in regards to the White House petition. In President Sylvia Escott-Stump\u2019s letter to Academy members, in response to CMS\u2019 response, she stated: \u201c\u2026[CMS\u2019 response] fails to appreciate that a referral from a primary care provider to an RD\u00a0<em>exemplifies<\/em>\u00a0cost effective and clinically effective coordinated care. Despite this limitation\u2026registered dietitians can work with physicians in the primary care setting and bill \u2018incident to\u2019 the physician or providers. While this opportunity is not ideal for registered dietitians, it is a significant first step in Medicare\u2019s coverage for obesity that previously did not exist, and we will build upon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong><em>What can each member do now?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Stay informed and know the facts.
