{"id":853,"date":"2013-12-24T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2013-12-24T15:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eatrightutah.org\/blog\/?p=853"},"modified":"2013-12-24T08:00:42","modified_gmt":"2013-12-24T15:00:42","slug":"and-medallion-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eatrightutah.org\/blog\/and-medallion-award\/","title":{"rendered":"AND Medallion Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eatrightutah.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Nyland-Nora-01-5x7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-855\" title=\"Nyland, Nora\" src=\"http:\/\/eatrightutah.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Nyland-Nora-01-5x7-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Utah\u2019s Dr. Nora Nyland was the recipient of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics\u2019 Medallion Award at this year\u2019s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Houston.\u00a0 The Medallion Award is national recognition reserved for those who have demonstrated leadership and service to the Academy and to the dietetics profession.<\/p>\n<p>Nora\u2019s career is replete with service and leadership through local and national associations as well as in her position as an Associate Professor at Brigham Young University.\u00a0 She has been involved in various leadership capacities with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the Council on Future Practice, the Dietetics Workforce Demand Study Task force, and the Utah Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.byu.edu\/archive13-oct-nora.aspx?utm_campaign=11142013&amp;utm_source=ynews&amp;utm_medium=emailhtml\">Press releases by BYU<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatright.org\/Media\/content.aspx?id=6442478528#.Up1-sKV3_wI\">the Academy<\/a>\u00a0are comprehensive and highlight many of her professional contributions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Over 1,000 BYU dietetics students have been educated and mentored by Nora.\u00a0 Reflecting on her career, the majority of her time has been spent working to create a strong dietetics program at BYU and preparing her students to be contributing dietitians and citizens.\u00a0 Her influence as an educator is both profound and personal.<\/p>\n<p>When I reflect on being Nora\u2019s student I can\u2019t help but think about how she somehow managed to tell me I was doing something completely wrong but I still left her office feeling optimistic and capable.\u00a0 I think about how despite her insanely busy schedule (see above), she always had time to meet with me and discuss whatever was on my mind.\u00a0 I remember her telling me that her dad used to always say, \u201cbe calm and expectant of good.\u201d\u00a0 I laugh as I recall her leaning against a piano in our classroom and pausing mid-lecture to say, \u201cI feel like a lounge singer,\u201d and without skipping a beat she was back to the foodservice systems model.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m not alone with these memories and lessons learned \u2013 I surveyed a few of Nora\u2019s past graduate students for their insights. \u00a0Ana Mitchell shared that \u201cNora has a way of making people feel important and needed. \u00a0This made me want to work hard not to let her down.\u201d\u00a0 Jennie Oler mentioned, \u201cher trust in us as students and later as professionals made all the difference and gave us confidence to reach new and greater goals.\u201d\u00a0 Samantha Rasmussen highlighted Nora\u2019s encouragement for students to volunteer and become professionally involved.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nora, congratulations and thank you!\u00a0You make Utah proud and we are grateful for your enormous influence within the Utah dietetics community.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Emily Vaterlaus MS, RD, CD<\/p>\n<p><em>UAND Public Policy Coordinator &amp; Advocacy Chair<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Utah\u2019s Dr. Nora Nyland was the recipient of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics\u2019 Medallion Award at this year\u2019s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Houston.\u00a0 The Medallion Award is national recognition reserved for those who have demonstrated leadership and service to the Academy and to the dietetics profession.
