{"id":730,"date":"2013-03-11T18:03:38","date_gmt":"2013-03-12T00:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eatrightutah.org\/blog\/?p=730"},"modified":"2013-03-11T18:03:38","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T00:03:38","slug":"public-policy-workshop-2013-day-one-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eatrightutah.org\/blog\/public-policy-workshop-2013-day-one-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Policy Workshop (PPW) 2013: Day One Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Thanks to Rickelle Richards &#8211; Advocacy Chair &#8211; for this update from DC! \u00a0Look for more updates coming soon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is Making History at PPW 2013!<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ethan Bergman PhD, RD, CD, FADA, kicked off the Academy\u2019s 2013 Public Policy Workshop (PPW) with a powerful challenge: &#8220;If dietetics is your profession, then policy should be your passion!&#8221;\u00a0 Dr. Bergman reminded attendees that advocacy starts with every member.\u00a0 In sticking with this year\u2019s theme, he inspired the audience by saying if we &#8220;work locally to improve the health of our community&#8230;it becomes a national movement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During lunch, Bergman presented the 2013 PPW Grassroots Excellence Award to an inspiring leader in grassroots advocacy and longtime (55 years!) Academy member: \u00a0Constance Locher-Boussard RD, LDN.\u00a0 Connie is a prime example of a committed, passionate nutrition policy leader who assured PPW that she is not done yet!<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bergman helped bring the successful day to a close with his remarks at the PPW\u2019s reception, where Academy members networked, mingled and reflected on the day\u2019s teachings.\u00a0 Sunday\u2019s sessions energized members as we prepare for advocacy opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Academy Members Are Briefed on \u201cOur Issues\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nPPW attendees were briefed on complex issues affecting dietetics, the future health of vulnerable populations, and the surrounding political environment.\u00a0 Nutrition policy experts covered important topics such as the budget, sequestration, Older Americans Act (OAA) and the Farm Bill, all which are impacting RDs\u2019 and DTRs\u2019 ability to best practice nutrition and dietetics and provide quality care to Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Sequestration, which went into effect on March 1, will cut millions of dollars to many vital programs and institutions, including NIH, FDA, CDC, WIC, food safety, Head Start, tribal services and senior meals. Since Congress is scheduled to pass a budget by the end of March, this is the perfect opportunity for us to storm the Hill and speak our message!<\/p>\n<p>Robert Blancato updated\u00a0members on the\u00a0OAA, which aims to keep older adults independent at home and in their communities.\u00a0 Nutrition programs, such as Meals on Wheels and congregate dining, are a major part of the OAA; they are critical to the well-being of the aging population.\u00a0 Blancato informed members that OAA saves millions in Medicaid and Medicare dollars \u2013 a good tidbit to take with you to the Hill!<\/p>\n<p>The Academy\u2019s Legislative Public Policy Committee Chair, Karen K. Ehrens, RD, LRD, moderated a session on the Farm Bill with a particular focus on SNAP-Ed.\u00a0 Experts informed attendees that SNAP and SNAP-Ed are susceptible to devastating cuts that would affect the 90 million people eligible for the program.\u00a0 Members learned about SNAP-Ed\u2019s innovative, creative, evidence-based, customized approach.\u00a0 Educate Congress about SNAP-Ed; it\u2019s not just pamphlets, pencils and posters but empowering programs and messages to help people make healthy lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>SNS DPG Recognized for Hard Work in Schools:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The Academy\u2019s School Nutrition Services (SNS) DPG was honored for its members\u2019 dedication to improving school meals.\u00a0 Dr. Thornton, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, thanked SNS for leading our children to better health.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Expanding Coverage Through Advocacy:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Changes in our health care system provide dietitians with opportunities to advocate and expand coverage for MNT services. \u00a0While changes will not happen overnight, it is up to dietitians to lobby, collaborate, and realize our importance in this exciting advancement.\u00a0 Create your personal advocacy action plan today!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Nutrition Informatics is Coming to a Computer Near You:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>The Academy\u2019s Nutrition Informatics Committee discussed technology changes that are impacting the way we care for our patients.\u00a0 Health data will follow patients throughout their lives and we must make sure nutrition information is included and data is collected!\u00a0 35% of hospitals are already using electronic health records!.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>HEN Hosts First PPW Film Festival:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>The Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPG showed the film\u00a0<em>Apple Pushers,\u00a0<\/em>a documentary portraying five immigrants\u2019 trials as green cart vendors and detailing their roles in NYC\u2019s struggle against food deserts.\u00a0 59 attendees were left feeling, \u201cIf they can do it, we can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to Rickelle Richards &#8211; Advocacy Chair &#8211; for this update from DC! \u00a0Look for more updates coming soon.
